The United States asked to send 15 refugees from the detention camp in Guantanamo, Cuba to Finland over a year ago, according to the newspaper Kaleva.

Finland is being urged to turn the European Union's focus on the plight of prisoners being held by the United States in Guantanamo. Around 100 prisoners who have been freed of terrorism-related charges are still awaiting release.

Finland is joining its Nordic neighbours in looking into possible illegal use of its airspace or airports by US planes carrying terrorism suspects. The Foreign Ministry announced Thursday it is launching a probe into the matter.
