An icebreaker assisted by two tugs has freed an Eckerö Line ferry that got stuck in the ice half an hour after leaving Helsinki Friday morning. The vessel with almost 850 passengers onboard arrived in Tallinn over seven hours late.
The ferry is will also be helped by icebreakers during its evening return trip to Helsinki if necessary.
Eckerö Line said the passengers were not in any danger and were offered food and beverages. The company says it doesn’t expect the Nordlandia ferry will face travel difficulties in the coming days.
Port authorities have reported the worst ice situation in years.
