On Friday, flags are hoisted around the country to mark Swedish heritage day.

The day, which has been celebrated since 1908, is aimed at fostering a sense of cohesion among Swedish-speaking Finns.

Swedish-speaking groups and organisations mark the day with various celebrations. For example, Swedish foundations grant scholarships and awards on Friday.

The Swedish People’s Party established November 6 as a special day in 1907.

Finnish and Swedish are both official languages in Finland. Swedish is the mother tongue of some six percent of the population.
