President Halonen Visiting Egypt and Syria

President Tarja Halonen travels to Cairo on Monday to start official visits this week to both Egypt and Syria.

President Halonen will be meeting with President of Egypt Hosni Mubarak and President of Syria Bashar al-Assad for bilateral talks. Discussions are expected to include bilateral relations, the situation in the Middle East and current international issues.

While in Egypt, President Halonen will also meet with Secretary-General Amr Moussa of the League of Arab States.

Following her stay in Egypt, President Halonen will travel to Syria for meetings with President al-Assad, Prime Minister Mohammad Naji al-Otri and Speaker of Parliament Mahmoud al-Abrash. President Halonen will also visit the Finnish Institute in Damascus. In Golan, she will visit the UNDOF peacekeeping operation.

President Halonen is scheduled to return to Finland on Friday.

Foreign Minister Alexander Stubb will be among the members of the delegation accompanying the President.
