Finland has been ranked first in the Prosperity Index published by the London-based think-tank Legatum. The survey of 104 nations ranks factors such as health, freedom, security and political governance as the definition of prosperity, rather than material wealth alone.

Finland took first place, up from third last year, and is followed by Switzerland, Sweden, Denmark and Norway. Although the index creates the ranking on the basis of considerations that include a wide range of non-economic factors, the top 30 nations are all wealthy industrialized countries.

In terms of average life satisfaction, Finland ranked second worldwide.

The Legatum Institute is associated with the Legatum global investment organisation. The London-based think-tank describes itself as a research, policy, and advocacy organisation that promotes political, economic and individual liberty with a special focus on the developing and transitioning world.
