Alcohol plays a role in 80 percent of the homicides in Finland. Meanwhile, drugs or a mix of drugs and alcohol are involved in 20 percent of the cases. The National Research Institute of Legal Policy reports there were 132 homicides in Finland last year.

Drunkenness also plays a significant role in assault and battery cases. Last year, nearly 35,000 cases of assault and battery were reported in Finland. Alcohol played a part in 70 percent of the cases.

Meanwhile, the institute says embezzlement, fraud and payment offences increased last year. For example, some 16,000 cases of fraud were reported last year. That’s about 20 percent more than the previous year.

However, just a fraction of white-collar crimes were reported.

Nearly 900,000 crimes were reported to Finnish police last year, a growth of eight percent from the previous year. Over half of the crimes were traffic crimes. Other reported crimes that rose were assaults, rapes and theft.
