The sharp-eyed may have seen a sauna flying in the skies over the city of Jyväskylä Friday night.

The flight of the flying sauna took place as part of the 1st International Midnight Balloon Rally. This weekend, the night skies over Jyväskylä have been speckled by about 20 colourful hot-air balloons from eight countries. The Midnight Balloon Rally, a rare opportunity for balloonists to make night time flights, has drawn hot air enthusiasts from as far away as China.

The hot-air balloons will fly in the Jyväskylä area over several nights between 11 pm and 1 am. The main take-off site for the balloons is the Laajavuori skiing centre, where spectators can observe the setting up and departure of the balloons. The take-off site will be separately announced via the Internet and radio on each flying day by 5 pm.

The Midnight Balloon Rally is organized by the Jyväskylä-based Arctic Balloon Team association, in co-operation with the Magialento company and Laajavuori Ltd. The Jyväskylä Regional Development Company Jykes Ltd is supporting the Midnight Balloon Rally by aiding companies that wish to create networks connected to the event.
