No Flood of CLass-Action Lawsuits in Courts

A law allowing class-action lawsuits in Finland has not resulted in a single group lawsuit, despite fears of opening a floodgate of litigation.

Assistant Director of the Consumer Agency Outi Haunio-Rudanko told the daily Savon Sanomat that the threat of a class-action lawsuit has worked effectively; it has occasionally been used as leverage by consumers trying to force a resolution in certain cases.

Finland's class action legislation came into force last October.

The Consumer Ombudsman may recommend such legal action in cases where a large number of consumers have the same grievance against the same party.
