Finland's Ministry of Interior has allocated 2 million euros to hire unemployed police officers. The funds can be used to provide work for 100 police officers for six months this year.

Currently 112 police officers are unemployed. The end of Finland's EU presidency and an increase in the number of police graduates at the beginning of the year contributed to the problem.

For most officers, unemployment has not dragged on too long. However police officers have have not always found jobs in their own district.

According to the Ministry, the problem is temporary. Officials have already adjusted the number of police trainees and increased funds to employ officers. Additional resources are still needed for next year. However after next year, the problem should be solved, as the number of police officers retiring will surpass the number of officers finishing training.

Unemployed police officers and trade union representatives gathered Friday in Helsinki to call for funds to employ police. Police say that nearly 300 cadets have completed their training, but have failed to find employment.
