YLE’S DIRECTOR OF STRATEGY AND DEVELOPMENT ISMO SILVO TO JOIN EUROVISION MANAGEMENT

YLE’s Director of Strategy and Development, Ismo Silvo, Ph.D. (Pol. Sc.), has been chosen as Chairman of the Board of the centre responsible for the European Broadcasting Union EBU’s operational activities. He will hold the post for two years, until the end of 2010.

EBU Eurovision Operations Department administers the global television and radio network carrying news, major international sports events, concerts and summit meetings. Eurovision’s key tasks include international news exchange and negotiating the television rights for top sports events such as the Olympic Games.

The administration of Eurovision was reformed last year, as part of a broader administrative reform of the European Broadcasting Union as a whole. Silvo says that Eurovision now operates more effectively on a market where there is no shortage of commercial challengers, e.g., in the field of telecommunications transfer.

”The first task of the new board is to create an effective strategy for Eurovision to deal with the tougher competition situation. The aim is to be the most attractive and trustworthy partner of broadcasting companies using the Eurovision network and other services ”, Silvo stresses.

Silvo was appointed Director of Strategy and Development at YLE in 2005. He has previously worked as Director of Programmes at YLE TV1 and YLE Teema and as the company’s Head of Strategic Planning. From 1993 to 1997, Silvo was Director of the European Audiovisual Observatory based in Strasbourg.

Ismo Silvo is already the second Finn to have been promoted to a significant EBU task. YLE’s former Director General Arne Wessberg was Chairman of the whole European Broadcasting Union from 2000 to 2006.
